Digital Voice Communications

Digital Voice Communications  includes the  use of cell phones, smart phones , and Voi (Voice over Ip). VoIP is a technology that allows users to speak to other users to speak to other users over the internet . VoIP can be used as a replacement for the traditional telephone in the home.

With more than 200 million in use in the United States , cell phones are a primary source of digital voice communications . Cell phones can act  as a suitable replacement for the traditional, wired , public switched telephone network.Smart phones offer features such as e-mail, text messaging , picture / video messaging , and playing or streaming multimedia . Figure indicates some advantages , disadvantages , and good practices of digital voice communications in your personal life. Figure shows some examples of digital voice communications , including visual voice mail, which is a service that automatically translates voice mail into text messages or allows you to downlaod voice messages to your smart phone and listen to them at your convenience.

Advantages
Increase productivity through greater and more timely communications.
Both cell phones and VoIP offer more choice in providers than the public switched telephone network.
Cell phones: Have been intrumental in saving lives in emergency situations.
voIP: often offer free features such as voice mail, unlimited in- country long distance calling , three-way calling , and call foewarding.
voIP: Typically is less expensive for boht local and long distance calls than the public switched telephone network.
Disadvantages
Cell phone:in some situations , such as while driving a car, can contribute to accidents.
voIP: Not as strictly regulated as the public switched telephone network, meaning that the quality to service  may be lower.
Good Practices
Cell phones: Use a headset if you must use a cell phone while driving.
Cell phones: When using in public  , be mindful of and courteous to those around you.
Cell phones : Be aware of rules or policies  at some locations, such as schools , medical  facilities , or  churches, cell phones : In public locations , use an  alternative ring method , such as a vibration setting , to avoid interrupting others.

Business embrace digital voice communications because of increased collaboration and producativity , cost savings , and mobility . Advantages
Increased communications and collabroation can result in increaased productivity and cost savings.
Cell phone:  Ability  to contact  aperson almost  anywhere at any time.
voIP: with some systems , employees can listen  to and manage their voice messages on their personal computer.
voIP: Alllows large companies to consolidatw communications between geographically diverse  locations.
VoIP: Implement as an  alternative to the public  switched telephone network because VoIP allows businesses to use their existing network more efficiently and provides more features than  the public switched telephone network.
Disadvantages
With many VoIP providers and some cell phone providers, connecting to a local service , such as 911 for emergencies, may be difficult or cumbersome.
The quality of calls may change at times due excessive network usage.
Cell phones : Misuse often leads to rude behavior or disruption of meetings.
VoIP: Large companies may find it expensive and diffcult to  mange .
VoIP: Unlike a public switched telephone network , many  VoIP systems and equipment will not funcation during a power outage.
Good Practices
Cell phone: Follow company policy regaarding the use for business communications.
Cell phones: Disable the ringer when in meetings or during important discussions.
Cell phone: Resist the need to  answer every call at all times such as when  you are on breaks or when you are not at work.
Cell phone: Avoid speaking loudly on the phone when walking through others’ work areas.
Cell phone: Limit personal calls on your cell phone during business hours.
voIP: when  possible , use a VoIP telephone rather than a cell phone because it generally is less expensive for the company on a per-call basis.
